An item like that, if it isn't independently magical (or too dangerous), would probably make it through Patho-Gen's scrutiny and be returned to them from the start. There might be some small signs of tampering, as if to make sure there was nothing strange about it (no hidden weapons or the like), but it'll ultimately be deemed harmless and returned with the rest of their things.
