About what happens if someone brings light into the underground cavern: How fast is the encroachment of these vines that respond to the light? Could someone bring a covered or inactive light source down there, activate it, and then throw it away from them as bait for whatever is down there?

Clever... Yes, one could bring a light source down into the pit, light it, and toss it. Creeping vines don't snag their prey so quickly that someone couldn't throw the lantern off to the side, which would occupy the plant dudes.<br><br>Once they grasp, crush, extinguish, or otherwise overwhelm the light or swallow it up, they'll redirect their focus to the <i>living</i> thing in the room. Or... un-living thing, for Spectral-types. It isn't a permanent fix once properly in the bigger room with the computer monitor in it, basically.
