Approximately how long do the effects of the bell last? A few minutes, an hour, whatever helps people have more horror in their character's lives?

As long as it needs to, really. They can be shaken off quickly, or be inescapable for hours. As the calling occurs twice a day for the whole month, it could be wildly variable in effectiveness, so the degree of horror can be tailored to meet a character's needs.
